Upcoming Payroll Laws – What Employers Should Start Preparing for Now

While not yet legislated, two major changes to Australian payroll laws have been announced and are scheduled to come into effect on 1 July 2026. These upcoming changes will impact how and when employers pay superannuation, and how they manage their payroll systems overall.

Payday Super
– Expected Start Date: 1 July 2026

The Australian Government has announced from 1 July 2026, employers will be required to pay their employees’ super at the same time as their salary and wages (instead of quarterly). This means more frequent payments, removing some of the flexibility which quarterly payments offered, and any late super payments are not tax-deductible.

We recommend automating payroll and super systems to align with payday super, and keep up communications with your bookkeeper to ensure systems can support this new law when it becomes mandatory.

Small Business Super Clearing Houses
– Expected Closure Date: 1 July 2026

Coinciding with the payday super rollout from 1st July 2026, ATO’s Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH) — a free service that allowed small businesses to make super contributions for multiple employees — will be shut down. Businesses will have to switch to other third-party platforms to handle super contributions, which may incur extra admin fees. We recommend you start researching alternative clearing-houses now, compare the costs and features, and begin a gradual transition.

Even though these laws aren’t enforced just yet, early preparation is key.
